Gear couplings and flexible couplings
To connect two shafts safely in a mechanical plant, Green Gear Trasmissioni offers a wide range of transmission couplings, divided into various types to meet different needs. All GGT couplings are designed to ensure reliable torque transmission, compensation of misalignments and long lifetime, with solutions ranging from rigid gear couplings to elastic and drum couplings. Depending on the application – whether a mill plant, heavy industrial machinery or a lifting system – GGT can supply the optimal coupling, made with quality materials and surface treatments.
The main categories of coupling available are listed below:
Gear Couplings
Gear couplings are torsionally rigid couplings, made up of two gear hubs that engage with each other, allowing a certain amount of backlash to compensate for small misalignments between the axes. GGT gear couplings are made with high-precision gear teeth with a crowned profile, which ensure optimal contact even under high loads. They are available both in standard versions and with customisations, for example integrated with brake discs or safety devices for special applications. The range covers needs from light to heavy duty applications: we can transmit impressive nominal torque (even above 15,000 kNm) with diameters up to 1800 mm. These couplings are used in mill plants, presses, industrial gear boxes and plants where a solid and durable connection between the drive shaft and the driven machine is required. The advantages include high load capacity, impact resistance and ease of maintenance.
Elastic Couplings
Elastic couplings use elastomeric or rubber elements to connect two shafts, introducing torsional flexibility into the system. This category of coupling is ideal for damping vibration, absorbing shocks and torque peaks and compensating for more pronounced misalignments than rigid couplings. GGT elastic couplings, available in various configurations (pin and elastic bush, elastomeric block, flexible laminae, etc.), protect upstream and downstream components by reducing the stresses transmitted during start-ups, stops or load variations. The result is smoother and quieter operation, with less wear on motors and gear boxes. These couplings are widely used both on iron and steel machines and on general plants (for example on electric motors coupled to gear boxes, industrial fans, pumps and compressors) where it is essential to damp vibration and ensure tolerant alignment. GGT designs its elastic couplings with an eye to ease of maintenance: many models allow the elastic elements to be replaced quickly without completely dismantling the coupling, reducing plant downtime.
Drum Couplings
Drum couplings incorporate a brake drum into their structure, thus combining the function of mechanical coupling with that of braking element. This type of coupling is typically used in lifting and handling systems (such as cranes, winches and hoists) and in industrial applications where machinery has to be braked or stopped without disengaging the motor. GGT drum couplings are designed to meet the most demanding requirements: their compact, optimised design makes it possible to reduce weight and overall dimensions for the same transmitted torque, making installation easier even in restricted spaces. The brake drum is sized to offer the maximum contact surface with the brake shoes, ensuring effective and modulated braking. In terms of transmission, GGT drum couplings retain all the advantages of a high-quality gear coupling: high load capacity, robustness and resistance to alternating loads. Every drum coupling can be customised to the customer’s specifications, for example in terms of drum diameter, type of connection to the shafts (shrink-fitted, keyed or flanged) and materials according to the operating environment. These solutions make it possible to increase safety and control in complex industrial systems, intelligently integrating transmission and braking.
Self-lubricating gear couplings
GGT couplings can be equipped with a self-lubricating spindle, which allows filling to be carried out only once a year. The system distributes the lubrication to the coupling automatically and evenly, without waste, reducing maintenance costs.
